The Olympic Rings

Further to our article earlier in the week, it has been announced by Sepp Blatter, President of FIFA, that the World Cup in 2022 hosted by Qatar will most likely be played in November or December 2022, rather than January of February, a full 9 months after the Winter Olympics will be held and a clash between the two competitions will therefore be avoided.

"It is logical to play this competition at the end of the year. We cannot have two competitions at the same time," said Sepp Blatter.

"It will be November-December. In January and February, these are the Olympic Winter Games. It is out of the respect to the Olympic organisation - the Olympic family. Secondly, we have practically the same media, television and marketing partners."

This is great news for winter sports and comes just as bids to host the Winter Olympics in 2022 are beginning to be announced. Oslo in Norway is currently the front-runner, while other bids from Ukraine, China, Kazakhstan, Sweden and a joint bid from Poland and Slovakia are also in the mix.

The deadline for submitting bids is Thursday 14th November 2013 with the winning bid due to be announced in July 2015.
