The Austrian resort of Solden may not be on the tip of people’s tongues when they think of top ski resorts across Europe, but this little gem ticks all the boxes when it comes to the perfect ski holiday. If you’re looking for a ski destination with plenty to keep you busy, both on and off the slopes, here’s why Solden might just be the best pick for your next ski holiday.

High altitude

Solden is a high altitude resort boasting no less than two glaciers, meaning snow is pretty much guaranteed and the views are simply spectacular. The ski area centres on three main peaks, each at over 3,000 metres high, offering a vast network of slopes, coupled with excellent snow reliability. (See below for more details.) The newish link that has now been made between the Rettenbach and Tiefenbach ski areas at the end of the glacier road means that skiers can appreciate the high runs and stunning views over some of the most spectacular alpine scenery in Austria.

The Big 3

Solden is Austria's only ski area with three mountains higher than 3,000 metres, and the resort makes the most of this by serving them with top-notch, modern lifts. The so-called Big 3 peaks are Gaislachkogl at 3,058 metres, Tiefenbachkogl at 3,250 metres and Schwarze Schneide at 3,340 metres. Ranked as one of the most picturesque ski trails across the entire ski region, this 50-kilometre tour of the slopes will see you exploring all three peaks.

Apres-ski action

Solden’s village stretches for more than two kilometres along the valley floor. The buildings are all traditional Tirolean in style and, in stark contrast to its peaceful neighbour, Obergurgl, the vibrant main street here is alive with countless bars, restaurants and shops lining either side. Solden is a lively resort with a fantastic atmosphere, making it a great choice for those who enjoy the apres-ski as much as the… well, ski-ski. On the slopes, more than 30 rustic mountain huts and restaurants welcome thirsty snow lovers in to rest those ski sore legs.
